Etsy selling fees: a US order cost checklist
Calculate US Etsy listing, transaction and payment processing costs with separate tax bases, allocated renewals and a worked profit example.
For a US seller with a US bank account and USD payment account, an Etsy order estimate combines allocated listing charges, the transaction fee and Etsy Payments processing. Add Offsite Ads only when the order is attributed to that program, then subtract your product and fulfillment costs to estimate profit. The Etsy fee calculator keeps those components separate so you can see which amount each fee uses.
Separate the fee components
The Etsy Fees & Payments Policy explains selling and advertising charges. The Etsy Payments Policy supplies the bank-country processing schedule. A processing rate for another country is not a substitute for a US bank rate, even when the listing uses dollars.
| Component | Rate or amount | Calculation basis |
|---|---|---|
| Allocated listing / renewal | $0.20 each | Number of charges allocated by the seller |
| Transaction | 6.5% | Item + buyer-paid shipping + gift wrap; excludes US sales tax |
| US-bank Payments | 3% + $0.25 | Gross order, including sales tax |
| Attributed Offsite Ads | 15% or 12%; $100.00 cap per order | Item + shipping + gift wrap; excludes US sales tax |
Why a single combined percentage can mislead
Adding the transaction and processing percentages together hides the fixed processing fee, listing allocation and different tax bases. It also omits advertising. A useful estimate is allocated listing + transaction on seller revenue + processing on gross order + processing fixed charge + attributed Offsite Ads. Calculate each component on its own base before adding the results.
Allocate listing charges deliberately
Listing and renewal charges are associated with listings, not simply one charge triggered by every checkout. Decide how many applicable charges to allocate to this sale using your listing and payment records. Renewals and multiple quantities can change that allocation; a valid credit can reduce it. The Etsy fee calculator accepts your charge count and does not determine credit eligibility. Enter the number of actual applicable $0.20 listing or renewal charges you have deliberately allocated to this sale, including earlier listing periods when relevant; do not automatically enter one merely because an order exists.
For a product that took several listing periods to sell, ignoring earlier charges can overstate its profitability. For a repeatable accounting approach, choose whether to allocate those charges per product or across sales, then apply that approach consistently. Do not allocate the same charge here and in Other costs.
Keep tax and shipping in the right places
In this US model, seller revenue is item price plus shipping charged plus gift wrapping. Marketplace-collected sales tax is excluded from revenue. Processing uses the tax-inclusive gross order; the transaction and Offsite Ads components use seller revenue.
Buyer-paid shipping is income before costs, not a reimbursement you can silently omit. Enter the actual fulfillment expense separately. Include materials, paid production work or other product costs that matter to your decision. If you want to value your own time, make the amount an explicit cost assumption; the tool does not infer a wage or the profitability of your labor.

Amounts use our half-up per-component estimate assumption. Official half-cent tie handling remains unverified. This reconciled example is not a promise of invoice equality.
Enter the example's price and cost first, then add shipping, fulfillment, tax and other expenses in Additional selling details. Leave Offsite Ads set to no attributed order and allocate one listing charge. For an attributed order, follow the separate Offsite Ads guide before choosing the status. The 12% and 15% rates depend on Etsy’s actual activated qualification and an attributed order, not your preferred advertising budget. A non-attributed order has no Offsite Ads charge even if the shop participates.
Reconcile expenses before changing prices
Use the fee breakdown to identify a difference rather than comparing only the final profit number. Check the listing charge count, bank country, shipping income, tax and advertising status first. Then check whether an expense is absent or counted twice.
This calculator covers one domestic Etsy.com order under its published US / USD scope. It does not automate refunds, credits, currency conversion, seller fee taxes, Pattern, Square or multi-item orders. Charges from other advertising or services can be allocated as known Other costs, but that does not make an otherwise unsupported transaction supported. A payout may include more than one sale, adjustments or held funds, so it is not a clean single-order profit figure. Our methodology documents the distinction between exact internal reconciliation and estimated platform billing. For a known actual-fee amount, use the custom margin calculator with a zero percentage and that amount as the fixed fee.
