eBay selling fees: what US sellers should include

Understand eBay final value fees, Store tiers, shipping and tax bases, advertising and the costs to include before pricing a US sale.

eBay selling fees are not one flat percentage of your item price. For a supported US sale, start with the category and Store schedule, apply its final value percentage tiers to the eligible gross sale, then add the per-order charge and any attributed advertising fee. To estimate profit, also subtract your own inventory, fulfillment and allocated listing costs. Use the eBay fee and profit calculator once you know the order's conditions.

Start with the exact category and Store plan

A similar product name does not establish the correct category. Check the category on the actual listing and your active subscription, then read the matching eBay selling fee schedule or Store schedule. Our supported table is deliberately narrower than eBay's full schedule. An unlisted category has no fallback in our calculator.

The table groups No Store with Starter, and Basic with Premium, Anchor and Enterprise, only because their supported final value fee schedules match in this snapshot. It does not imply equal subscription prices or listing allowances. Select the category and Store plan on your actual account; this table excludes performance surcharges, account discounts and special shipping exceptions.

Additional per-order fee: $0.30 at or below $10.00; $0.40 above. Tiers use the gross fee basis, including standard shipping and sales tax. Tier portions are summed before rounding.

Use the confirmed listing category and Store plan in the eBay fee calculator; an unsupported category has no substitute rate.

How progressive tiers work

Apply each percentage only to its portion of the fee basis. Moving above a threshold does not reduce the rate on the entire order. For an amount that crosses the first threshold, the structure is first threshold × first rate + excess × next rate. The calculator sums these portions before rounding the percentage component. Watches have a separate three-tier schedule, so do not substitute a general category rate.

Build the correct fee basis

For the standard domestic orders we support, the gross fee basis is item price plus buyer-paid shipping plus marketplace-collected sales tax. Seller revenue excludes that collected tax. These are two different totals: a tax amount can increase a selling fee without becoming money you keep.

Charging separately for shipping does not remove shipping from the fee basis. Record both the amount charged to the buyer and the actual label, packaging and fulfillment expense. For free shipping, charged shipping is zero; your fulfillment cost is still an expense. eBay documents shipping exceptions. If an exception applies to your listing, do not force it into our standard-shipping model.

Add costs that are not in the percentage

Before submitting an estimate, collect:

  • The actual attributed General campaign rate, if this order incurred an ad charge. A planned campaign budget is not an order fee. Check eBay's General campaign documentation and your campaign report.
  • Any insertion fee or listing upgrade allocated to this sale. An unsold listing can still be part of your business's cost base.
  • An intentional allocation of Store subscription overhead, supplies and other expenses. Use a repeatable allocation method rather than treating a monthly charge as a fee on every order.

Our calculator puts these last allocations in Other costs. It does not determine whether you owe them. Avoid counting an allocated expense again as a separate fulfillment or product cost.

Amounts use our half-up per-component estimate assumption. Official half-cent tie handling remains unverified. This reconciled example is not a promise of invoice equality.

To reproduce the example, choose Crafts and No Store, enter the item price and item cost, then open Additional selling details for shipping, tax, other costs and the attributed ad rate. Compare the fee breakdown with your own records. The eBay profit calculation guide explains how to reconcile the result.

Check scope before relying on the estimate

This model covers one item in one standard domestic order, US seller and buyer, USD, and the exact supported categories and subscriptions. Multi-item orders, refunds, international orders, special shipping bases, performance surcharges and account discounts need separate treatment. The official schedule governs billing; our methodology describes an estimate with explicit rounding assumptions. If your order is outside coverage, stop and use your actual account fees in the custom margin tool rather than selecting a nearby category.

Official sources and review record
